Janitor Job Description


Job Summary:

This role involves cleaning and sanitizing classrooms, play areas, restrooms, and other common areas, ensuring the facility meets health and safety standards. This role maintains a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for children, staff, and visitors. The janitor will also assist with waste management, supply restocking, and general maintenance tasks as needed. A focus on child safety and hygiene is critical, as well as the ability to work independently while following established procedures.


Duties/Responsibilities:

All duties will comply with Head Start/Early Head Start standards, DFS licensing, NAEYC guidelines, Wyoming Division of Disabilities regulations, and WCFD policies. All employees will adhere to the mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures of WCFD.

  • Complete a cleaning schedule and checklist to ensure the building remains clean, organized, and operational.

  • Maintain cleaning supplies inventory and notify supervisor when supplies are low.

  • Ensure high-touch surfaces, including doorknobs, light switches, and handrails, are disinfected regularly.

  • Assist in setting up and cleaning after events or activities.

  • Report any maintenance issues or safety concerns to management.

  • Follow all health, safety, and sanitation procedures as outlined.

  • Vacuum all carpets within the assigned area.

  • Wash windows and frames as directed.

  • Dust mop or damp mop vinyl or tile floors as required.

  • Empty and sanitize waste and sanitary receptacles, ensuring proper disposal practices.

  • Sanitize and refill all dispensers, including soap and paper towel dispensers.

  • Replace light bulbs as needed and clean light fixtures to maintain proper lighting.

  • Clean furniture and surfaces as directed.

  • Operate physical facility equipment such as carpet shampooers, floor buffers, vacuums, ladders, drills, etc.

  • Read and follow safety instructions on cleaning supplies, ensuring proper usage of chemicals.

  • Proactively seek additional tasks when regular duties are completed to ensure facility cleanliness and order.

  • Ensure ability to perform job functions safely, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Board or its designee.

  • Adhere to all policies, guidelines, and operational procedures set forth by WCFD.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with children ranging from three to five years old, including those with special needs, and their families.

  • Must possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to follow both written and verbal instructions accurately.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required to collaborate with a diverse range of individuals and personalities.

  • Strong communication skills are essential to interact with staff, children, families, and the broader community.

  • Must have effective stress management strategies and the ability to maintain composure in challenging situations.

  • Flexibility is key; the ability to adapt to changing daily routines is required.

  • Bilingual candidates are preferred.

Education and Experience:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or a G.E.D. and be 18 years of age (state requirements).

  • Must possess a foundational understanding of cleaning protocols and be able to perform duties in a way that consistently meets the cleanliness and hygiene standards required for educational institutions.

  • Must attain additional training or certifications, which may be required by Wyoming Child and Family Development, Inc.

  • Ability to read technical materials for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods without fatigue or discomfort.

  • Must be able to travel to various sites, meetings, and training sessions, both in-state and out-of-state.

  • Must be willing to drive safely in a variety of weather conditions.

  • Capable of hearing and processing both in-person and telephone conversations.

  • Must be able to work in a variety of temperatures, including hot and cold weather.

  • Ability to work in air-conditioned buildings and under fluorescent lighting.

  • Must be able to climb stairs, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or reach, to retrieve materials and supplies from ground level to a height of at least 5 ft.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to assist children in emergency situations and provide first aid when needed.
