Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist Job Description


Job Summary:

The Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist (CDN/RDN) will provide remote nutrition oversite services for Head Start children (ages 0-5) and families. This role ensures compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and USDA Child Nutrition Program requirements, promoting healthy growth and development through individualized nutrition planning, menu oversight, and family education. This position is classified as PRN (“as needed”). Based on past utilization, the role averages approximately 85 hours annually, distributed monthly depending on task timelines, deadlines, and the enrollment of children with dietary needs. This position may be filled either as a WCFD employee classified as a substitute or as an independent contractor, provided the individual meets contractor eligibility criteria.


Duties and Responsibilities

All duties will comply with Head Start/Early Head Start standards, DFS licensing, NAEYC guidelines, Wyoming Division of Disabilities regulations, and WCFD policies. All employees will adhere to the mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures of WCFD.

  • Assist with nutrition assessments and develop Nutrition Care Plans and Medical Statements for   children with special dietary needs.

  • Participate in a minimum of one monthly virtual collaboration team meeting.

  • Review and approve menus yearly to ensure compliance with USDA and Head Start standards.

  • Provide nutritional education and training for families, staff, and children as needed.

  • Collaborate with healthcare providers and community partners (WIC, medical/dental professionals) as needed.

  • Assist the Director of Health and Nutrition and Nutrition Specialist with follow-up on nutrition-related concerns.

  • Participate in Health and Interdisciplinary Services Advisory Committee meetings.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and ensure confidentiality in compliance with Head Start regulations.

  • Ensures the safety of all enrolled children and families while participating in WCFD programs.

  • Maintains the confidentiality of program children, families, and staff.

  • Reports suspected child abuse in accordance with the policies and procedures of Wyoming Child and Family Development, Inc.

  • Follows all policies and procedures of Wyoming Child and Family Development, Inc.

  • Abides by WCFD Standards of Conduct.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Board or its designee.

  • Able to perform the essential functions of the position, as defined in the job description, without presenting a danger to either self or others, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Must have an employment physical and TB risk assessment prior to work with children.

  • Must have AHA CPR and First Aid Training completed within 90 days, unless otherwise specified by the supervisor.

  • Wyoming Child and Family Development, Inc. requires all prospective employees to participate in a Central Registry and criminal background check, including fingerprinting, upon hire and every 5 years.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, safe driving record and liability insurance as required by Wyoming State Law. Driving records are reviewed annually.

  • Wyoming Child and Family Development requires an initial statement of health from a licensed healthcare provider and a health status annual assessment.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of early childhood nutrition, CACFP, and Head Start standards.

  • Proficiency in nutrition assessment tools and electronic record systems.

  • Excellent communication and remote collaboration skills.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Must be well organized and able to problem solve.

  • Must have the interpersonal skills necessary to work with diverse families, community groups and staff.

  • Must possess proper stress management techniques.

  • Must be able to work in a flexible daily routine and change as required.

Education & Certification Requirements

Required:

  • Master’s degree in Nutrition or Dietetics

  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential

  • Wyoming Dietetics License or eligibility for licensure.

Preferred:

  • Experience in early childhood or Head Start programs.

  • Familiarity with telehealth platforms.

  • Additional certifications in child feeding or infant/toddler nutrition.

  • Experience with Pregnant women and breastfeeding support

Must attain additional training or certifications, which may be required by Wyoming Child and Family Development, Inc.


Physical Requirements:

  • Must possess visual acuity and stamina to read technical material for extended periods of time.

  • Be able to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time without fatigue or discomfort.

  • Must be able to hear and process ordinary conversation and telephone conversation.

  • Must be able to climb stairs, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or reach, to retrieve materials and supplies from ground level to a height of at least 5 ft.

  • Must have upper body strength to lift and carry the equivalent of 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to assist a child to safety in case of an emergency.

  • Must be able to work in a variety of temperatures, including hot and cold weather.

Additional Requirements

  • Must pass background checks and child protective services registry screening.

  • Reliable internet and remote work setup.

  • Monthly check-in via Zoom or phone, with occasional email correspondence for questions.

  • Additional hours may be required in August and September to support new enrollments; minimal or no hours are typically needed during summer months.

Classification Disclosure:
This job description reflects the duties and expectations of the role as an employee position. Individuals engaged as independent contractors will be subject to a separate contractual agreement outlining contractor-specific terms, responsibilities, and compliance requirements, which must be reviewed and signed prior to engagement. Final classification will be determined based on eligibility, regulatory requirements, and mutual agreement.
